Founded in 1963,
the Oslo International School (OIS) is a fully accredited
international school catering to children of all nationalities
within the greater Oslo area. In a secure and caring
environment, OIS provides stimulating and creative academic
programmes, taught in English, for students from 3 to 18 years
of age (from Pre-School to IB Diploma).
The school is situated in Bekkestua, a pleasant suburb, about 15
minutes drive from the centre of Oslo and within easy reach by
bus and tram. Extensions to the building have recently been
added. These include new science laboratories, library, kitchen,
reception office, main entrance, lobby area and a new wing for
the Lower Primary classes. In addition there has been a
comprehensive renovation of the existing building. Work will
shortly commence on the final construction phase which will
provide new facilities for drama, music and PE.
The school has varied outdoor areas for recess, although access
is currently restricted to some parts due to the ongoing
construction work. We also have easy access to playing fields
and a public swimming pool which are adjacent to the school.
Total enrolment of the school is 570 children representing
approximately 50 different nationalities. Classes/teaching
groups are small with a maximum of 22 students, and teaching
groups are often smaller. The school year is from late August to
late June. Students are encouraged to become independent,
life-long learners equipped to face the challenges of today’s
world and accepting of individual and cultural diversity.
The school’s vision and values statement gives a challenging
focus to all aspects of our work with, and for, the students.
Quality assurance is also provided through our accreditations
with the Council of International Schools (CIS) and the New
England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC), OIS is also
approved by the Norwegian Ministry of Education. We do not
receive any subsidy for the school from the national or local
authorities.
